NEWS Item from Chhattisgarh :
RAIPUR: Working in various government departments, including the Postal and Income Tax, were hit as employees, primarily group C and D, joined the two-day strike called by the Confederation of Central government Employees and Workers to demand higher salaries and inclusion in Seventh Pay Commission.

Perhaps the worst hit was the postal department where nearly 10,000 employees joined the strike, adversely affecting the distribution of mail. Though ever since the advent of e-mail and Internet, the demand for mailing services has declined, the postal department still reportedly distributes about 2.5 lakh letters per day.

Talking to TOI, SA Hameed, secretary, Postal trade union, Chhattisgarh circle, said there are about 6000 Gramin Dak Sevaks, who work part time in rural area, and are paid only Rs 3000 to Rs 4000 a month. He said the government must absorb them and redress their problems.

Another member of Postal Employees union said 20 to 25% vacancies existed in the department but the government not filling the posts. He said many post offices across the state were facing acute shortage of postmen but still the government not hiring people. He said their demand also include lifting of the recruitment ban and filling of al vacancies at the earliest. He said many people were working with the department either as part-timers or casual workers.

Work was partially affected in the IT department also where about 500 group C employees joined the strike. According to Pawan Singh Thakur, President, Income tax Employees Federation, Chhattisgarh circle, all the Class C employees stayed away from work.
Meanwhile, the centre has warned the employees of consequences including deduction of wages and disciplinary action, in case they took part in a two days strike. The government has dubbed the strike as illegal in view of the apex court judgement, which states that employees' association do not have any right to strike work.
